Top ten topics that are covered:
Climate - Not ESG, but what Japan is doing to tackle climate change and how it impacts farming, industry, construction, transport and science. This will also touch on climate induced crises globally, and how Japan contributes with ways to deal with it.
Consumption - At nearly 60% of GDP, following domestic consumption trends; what makes people spend, on what and what stops them. This also touches on pay increases versus inflation and eradicating deflationary mindsets.
Economy - Economy essentials, not dwelling too much on theory but on practical aspects and what that means for investing in Japan, what The Bank of Japan and The Ministry of Finance are likely to do. This will also cover view on FOREX, stock and bond markets, how pension money is shifting away from China and emerging Asia. How to access growth in Asia via Japan will also be periodically discussed.
Energy - Japan is fast to come up with solutions, but slow to implement them. However, energy is in transition in Japan and influences global shifts to renewables. Technologies will conrtinue to develop and markets will grow, from batteries to nuclear. An interesting thematic that will continuously offer opportunities.
Security - All aspects of domestic security; defence, disaster recovery, food, energy and dealing with criminal activities. A focus on defence and how Japan’s activities beyond its boarders is changing, moving away from a US defence umbrella and forging new partnerships in Europe, and new markets in Asia will be a key topic for investors.
Space - It is highly likely a Japanese astronaught will be next to walk on our moon alongside Americans returning to the lunar surface, potentially to colonize. From micro-satellite orbital delivery systems that run on cow dung to heavy lifting rockets, to making sports drinks in space, there is an opportunity for Japan to play a major role developing space technologies to participate in this decade's race back to our moon and Mars, and will capture young minds imagination fostering a new generation of aspiring astronauts.
Supply-chain - Shifting away from China, to India, Vietnam and back onshore in Japan where supply chains are rapidly being reformatted having discovered severe weaknesses during covid, is providing Japan with many opportunities in factory automation and robotics, as well as a return to being an onshore manufacturer.
Technology - Tech buzz comes and goes; crypto came and went, blockchain failed to deliver, The Metaverse has all but collapsed and NFTs 'investments' in their original form are but a distant memory. What happens to AI and new tech fads that come along will be covered under technology, including oddities that may just be something we really want or need.
Tourism - Keeping on top of tourism trends will be key, a very rewarding theme for investors due to its high visibility, but sustainability is now in question. Just how much juice can Japan extract from surging interest in visiting such a exotic and inexpensive destination, enjoying the best food, products and content that is now finding its way into multi-faceted entertainment: film, TV, music, theatre and theme parks overseas.
Water - Japan has a history of successfully dealing with water stress for over 70 years through high-tech and low tech processes. As globally we face a water crisis due to shifting weather patterns, over population and exploitation of limited resource of fresh water, Japan will play an increasingly important role in water supplies, water management and waste treatment.
...and others as interesting topics develop. There is always something to talk about.
